Basic Christianity

The bible is the written word of God. An inheritance that was lost and restored; The bible tell us about Adam and Eve and their descendants. We are among those descendants and we inherited the nature of Adam, fallen and at emnity with God because Adam chose to use his freewill to disobey God. But God had made provision for such an eventuality and the biblical record is nothing less than God's outline for reconciling fallen Man to Himself.
The gravity and extreme joy of the Christian journey is most poignantly expressed in the oft quoted bible passage, John 3:16, which begins "For God so loved the world..." Here we learn that God loved us, His Creations, so much that He was willing to sacrifice His only Son to save us.
As incredible as it seems, there was one thing that God Almighty did not know; He did not know, from experience, what it was like to be a Man. However, He was determined to remedy that. In line with both prophecy and Hebrew legal precedent, as in The Book Of Ruth, which explains that the recovery of a lost inheritance requires someone near of kin, both in possession of the price and willing to pay, God's Spirit made pregnant a young woman of the Tribe of Judah and thus put on a cloak of humanity by being born Jesus of Nazzareth.
So here was Jesus, come into the world part Man - so as to be near of kin to us - and part God, so as to have the ability to acquire the price to be paid to restore that which Adam had lost. And what was that price? The Old Testament taught us that the only suitable sacrafice for sin was death, in the case of the Hebrews an animal, usually a Lamb without spot or blemish, was used as a substitute. The Hebrew sacrifice only covered the people for one year. So then, if Jesus was embody the price within Himself, He had to live the perfect, sinless life. It was only the part of Jesus that was God that allowed him to overcome temptation and be the spotless Lamb, sacrificed not just for one year but once for all.
As we learn in The Gospels, Jesus' ministry and life on Earth ended in them laying down of His blameless life in order to redeem our lost inheritance. And then, exerting the greatest power ever known, He arose from death and presented Himself to God The Father as payment for fallen Mankind. But not before He sent out into the world His disciples, whom we call The Apostles, to preach The Good News; That Man no longer needed to be at emnity with God but could, through Him, begin being conformed to His image and advance toward perfection.
One of the first things we should learn from The Apostles is that what they are preaching and commending to us is a relationship with God, through Jesus Christ, and not a religion. In a world filled with clannish and secretive religious structures, Jesus preached no ethic other than Himself. Neither Buddha, Mohammed, nor Confucius ever said”I am The way..." (John 14:6) Only Jesus made such a claim. Further, The Apostles taught us that Jesus would indwell us and with the power of The Holy Spirit – that same power which raised Him from among the dead (Romans 8:11) - begin to change us from the inside out. Our only duty then, is to maintain that relationship with God through Jesus Christ, at all costs.

What is required for us to maintain a saving relationship with God, through Jesus Christ? Not much, for it is His power that drew us and His power that saved us. Had we the ability, through force of our own will, to modify our lives toward perfection, Jesus would not have had to make His great sacrifice. What we bring to the table is a willing and contrite heart, humbled by the reality of our fallen nature and lost inheritance and in awe of the price required to redeem it. For our part prayer, study, and acts of obedience and identification - such as Baptism and The Communion - are what we should be about. Out of these beginnings come the ability to incline one's ear to the voice of The Holy Spirit and the guidance of our own particular ministries.
"But" you may ask "what about the sin which so easily beset us?" Did not Jesus promise to come into our hearts? Is He not the author and finisher of our faith? (Hebrews 12:2)

Listen; any good parent is going to observe their child and address those issues that our most important in the child's continued happiness and survival. Parents with more than one child know that each has their own unique sets of needs and priorities. Is not our Heavenly Parent at least this wise? Of course He is and therefore He will, over time and with great regard for our individuality and free will, address those things - as we surrender them to Him - that keeps us from Him. These things He will address first, knowing that our spiritual survival depends upon it.
The above illustration is why the religious traditions of man fall short: We, not being God and not knowing the priorities within the hearts of other men, set up our religious organizations with standardized codes of conduct and behavior. This is, when all is said and done, the only thing we can do UNLESS we believe God, preach His word and allow Him to do the work on the hearts of individuals. How many religious organizations do you know that operate in this manner? Not many.
So unbelieving man, with his traditions and religious forms, often find themselves in opposition to the workings of God in the lives of individuals.
So then, while standardized codes of behavior are of little value, we can, paradoxically, expect to witness certain traits in individuals who have a relationship with God through Jesus Christ. This is discussed, amidst great controversey, in the writings of The Apostle James. "Show me your fruits..." James demands, and upon his words have been built great legalistic and behavioralistic religious groups. But alas, most misunderstand James. James was not proposing to measure your spiritual value by examining your good works. (James 2:1-26) No, he was saying that if a person failed to manifest certain fruit then he questioned the authenticity of their relationship with God through Jesus Christ. So while God works on the hearts of men on an as-needed basis, He is also about the work of conforming us to the image of His Son.
The traits of Jesus: Jesus - all of God in the flesh that we needed to understands - came to this Earth with all of the power imaginable and behaved as a servant to mankind. Jesus contained within Himself, the ultimate empathy for others. He also, as was demonstrated often, had a common touch with people. So while God cleans out the dirty little corners of our hearts, we should begin to see ourselves grow in both the ability to empathize with others and the ability to appear to others as what we'd call today "a regular guy." Unfortunately we see the opposite in many of the churches in today's world. We see people who are mean and without feeling for others and rather than having a common touch, are high and lifted up in their own minds, desiring to be held in high esteem by virtue of some title of position. It is to such folk that The Apostle James put his questions.
So then, the questions we will be dealing with are these: Now that we're Christians, what are we to do? And... what does it look, taste and smell like to be a Christian? Remember His words; "My yoke is easy and my burden is light..." (Mat 11:30)
